- Start with a series of gentle SOVT warm-up exercises, such as lip trills, humming, and sirens, to awaken the vocal cords
- Introduce proper breathing techniques, emphasizing diaphragmatic breathing for improved breath support
- Guide the student through exercises to expand their breath capacity and control
Posture and Vocal Resonance:
- Discuss the importance of good posture for optimal vocal production
- Teach the student how to maintain an aligned and relaxed posture while singing
- Focus on developing vocal resonance by exploring different vocal placements and techniques, such as forward placement, mask resonance, and proper vowel shaping
Vocal Range Expansion and Ear Training:
- Assess the student’s current vocal range and identify any areas of improvement
- Introduce exercises to expand the student’s range, such as scales, arpeggios, and vocal sirens
- Incorporate ear training exercises to improve the student’s pitch accuracy and intonation skills
Articulation, Diction, and Sight-Reading:
- Discuss the importance of clear articulation and diction in singing
- Teach the student exercises to improve their pronunciation and articulatory precision
- Introduce basic sight-reading skills, focusing on recognizing notes, rhythms, and intervals
Dynamics, Phrasing, and Vocal Timbre:
- Explore the concept of dynamics in vocal performance, including soft and loud singing
- Guide the student in incorporating dynamic variations and expressive nuances into their chosen songs
- Work on developing vocal timbre, which involves the unique tone and color of the voice, by experimenting with different vocal techniques, resonance adjustments, and vowel modifications. Developing vocal timbre adds a unique and personal quality to a singer’s voice, allowing them to express themselves more authentically
Live Singing Techniques:
- Discuss microphone techniques and how to adjust vocal technique for live performances
- Teach the student how to project their voice effectively while maintaining vocal quality and control in different performance settings
- Work on stage presence, connecting with the audience, and adapting to different performance environments.
Recording Techniques:
- Introduce the basics of recording vocals, including microphone selection, placement, and room acoustics
- Discuss vocal production techniques, such as doubling, harmonies, and layering, to enhance recordings
Multi-Genre Training:
- Introduce the student to various musical genres according to their interests, such as pop, Mandarin pop, rock, jazz, R&B, classical, and musical theater
- Analyze and discuss the vocal characteristics, stylistic elements, and performance techniques associated with each genre
- Help the student adapt their vocal technique, expression, and stylistic choices to suit different genres
Performance and Interpretation:
- Work on song interpretation, focusing on conveying emotions and storytelling through singing
- Help the student develop stage presence and microphone technique
- Offer guidance on musical phrasing, dynamics, and expression to enhance the student’s overall performance
- Teach the student develop a deeper understanding of their chosen songs, their meaning, and how to effectively convey emotions both in live performances and recorded tracks
- Learn how to maintain consistent vocal quality, expression, and technique across different performance and recording contexts
Music Theory and Song Analysis:
- Introduce fundamental music theory concepts, such as notation, scales, and chords
- Analyze the student’s chosen songs to understand their harmonic and melodic structure
- Explore how music theory concepts can inform and enhance the student’s vocal performance
Vocal Health and Maintenance:
- Educate the student about proper vocal health practices, including hydration, vocal rest, and avoiding vocal strain
- Provide tips for vocal maintenance, such as regular warm-ups, cool-downs, and vocal exercises
- Discuss common vocal issues and ways to prevent them, such as vocal nodules or hoarseness
